Researchers agree that regular caffeine consumption may cause a physical dependence; in other words, coffee, if drunk consistently is addictive. They cite common withdrawal symptoms such as crankiness, headaches, lethargy, etc. from lack of caffeine to support their claim. Some doctors have classified caffeine withdrawal as a mental disorder! Now before you throw out your coffee maker you should know that since there is very little scientific research establishing boundaries and hard parameters around this, it should be taken with a grain of salt. What we do know is that coffee is a stimulant and that abruptly quitting coffee can produce mild withdrawal symptoms, even if you drink as little as 100 milligrams of caffeine a day.
Who said there’s something wrong with being a coffee addict anyways? Drinking coffee improves concentration, keeps you alert, and can even help with short term memory. It sure beats crack, heroin, and nicotine doesn’t it? Besides, drinking coffee makes you look smarter and more cultured, and is good for you if you’re athletic.
Some funny coffee addict jokes… You Know You’re a Coffee Addict If:
You have to watch videos in fast-forward.
You chew on other people’s fingernails.
You don’t sweat, you percolate.
Instant coffee takes too long.
You answer the door before people knock
You have a picture of your coffee mug on your coffee mug.
You soak your dentures in coffee overnight.

I’m a researcher. I don’t agree at all. You’re pulling this one out of your rear end.
Maybe I’ll change my mind the next time I’ve seen a guy lose his job over his inability to control his addiction — or if I find a woman who sold her child into sex slavery to support her habit. But until then, you’re blowing smoke.
Hey Brad,
Thanks for stopping by. Here’s a link to the article saying that coffee addiction is classified as a mental disorder by at least one researcher.
