Coffee maps will show you that coffee comes from places all over the globe. While they stay within longitudinal parameters (mostly in tropical areas), the coffee bean is found in South America, Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia. Coffee production spans 5 continents and dozens of countries across the globe. The variance in climate, soil, and bean accounts for a noticeable difference in flavor.

Roasting and Brewing

While the variety of the coffee plant affects the taste, the way the bean is dealt with after harvesting contributes to the flavor also.  Although plant variety can affect the taste of coffee, the way it is handled following harvesting has a great deal to do with the flavor as well.

Some coffee beans are naturally roasted by the sun. This usually results in darker and bitterer tasting coffee. The sun does the roasting and then the grinding and brewing adds its own effect to the flavor.

From Coffee Makers to Cappuccino and Espresso

There are a ton of coffee recipes each one calling for its own kind of coffee maker. There are different types of cappuccino, espresso and coffee makers on the market. Each of these appliances is designed to make specific coffee types. Cappuccino is a rich, dark coffee whose recipe originated in Italy. It is a milder version of Espresso, but not as light as “city” coffee. Espresso is made by high heat and pressure which produces a thicker and more potent cup of coffee. This is usually served in much smaller cups and quantities because of how strong it is.

Obviously, electric coffee machines are extremely popular for home use. There are tons of coffee makers with unique features. From drip coffee makers, to vacuum coffee makers, to self cleaning coffee machines, there is a ton of selection. Some are even voice activated and will grind the beans also. These grind and brew combo machines are the ideal way to get the freshest cup of coffee.

Decaf and coffee types that contain caffeine can be equally as appealing to the taste buds. But just because it tastes strong doesn’t mean it has more (or less) caffeine.
