Ever tried looking for coffee makers at the department store? If you have, then you’ve probably evaluated different brands and styles, along with a ton of (useless?) features. Or maybe you didn’t find a coffee machine that had the right features. A lot of people feel this way; they usually buy the best looking coffee maker on display, but don’t get the most out of it because it’s just not a good fit for them. The truth is that there are a ton of great coffee makers; some are very chic, some extremely functional, and some are quite eco-friendly. There is no shortage, you just need to know what you want and where to find it.

Percolators are the most popular type of coffee machine. They’re the most basic electric coffee maker. They are more commonly placed on a stove though so the water can be directly heated by the flame. It’s a good option if you’re using mild coffees.

Drip coffee makers give you a little more flexibility and they come in two  basic types: manual and automatic. They use paper (sometimes nylon or gold) filters and pass hot water over coffee grounds and past the filter into a carafe. They are the most commonly found coffee maker in offices and homes. They come in many different styles and are among the most popular coffee makers in the world. All major coffee maker manufacturers make drip coffee makers. The only difference with manual drip coffee makers is that they give you more flexibility by allowing you to change the taste of the coffee mid-brew by adding more coffee grounds. Unless you use a gold filter, the only drawback of the drip coffee maker is the papery taste of the filter.

French Press coffee makers are classic. They require a coarser coffee grind and take longer to brew.

Espresso Makers are becoming more and more popular at home. The manual espresso maker is takes up less space, is easy to use, and is pretty hip. In general, there are two types of espresso makers; the stovetop and the electric. The stovetop espresso maker is much cheaper than the electric with the same principle of making coffee. For some, this type of coffee machine makes the perfect cup of coffee.

These are your most basic types of coffee makers. There are more novel ones like the vacuum coffee maker and others, but percolators, drip coffee makers, espresso makers, and French press coffee makers are the most common ones you’ll find.
